MonaLisa Touch Q & A

How does chemotherapy cause vaginal atrophy?

The drugs used during chemotherapy can damage your ovaries. As a result, the ovaries stop producing estrogen and you enter menopause. Your chemotherapy-induced menopause may be temporary or permanent, depending on the type of drugs used for your treatment.

The loss of estrogen at menopause, whether due to age or chemotherapy, causes well-known symptoms such as hot flashes. Many women, however, aren’t prepared for another common health problem caused by menopause -- vaginal atrophy.

What is vaginal atrophy?

Estrogen has an important role in vaginal health. It keeps vaginal tissues elastic and maintains adequate blood flow and lubrication. Low levels of estrogen cause thinning, inflammation, and loss of elasticity in vaginal tissues. This condition, called vaginal atrophy, produces symptoms such as:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Painful intercourse
  • Vaginal burning
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Urinary incontinence

How does MonaLisa Touch treat vaginal atrophy?

The MonaLisa Touch is an advanced medical device that uses a fractional CO2 laser to gently warm tissues in the vagina. Heat from the treatment stimulates collagen production along with new hyaluronic acid, which holds moisture.

Treatment with the MonaLisa Touch also reestablishes a normal blood supply and tightens tissues lining the vagina. All of these changes work together to restore vaginal health and eliminate symptoms caused by vaginal atrophy.

Why is MonaLisa Touch beneficial for breast cancer survivors?

Hormone replacement therapy is the standard treatment for vaginal atrophy. Since women with hormone-sensitive breast cancer can’t take estrogen, they have few medical treatment options for alleviating their symptoms. MonaLisa Touch provides safe, effective, and long-lasting relief from vaginal atrophy -- without taking hormones.

What should you expect during and after treatment with MonaLisa Touch?

A specially designed device is inserted into the vagina, where it sends laser energy into tissues lining the vagina. The procedure is painless, so you won’t need anesthesia. It’s also quick; the entire treatment lasts about five minutes.

Your doctor at Wittgrove and Brown will give you care instructions to follow when your session is finished. Most women don’t have any side effects, and you won’t need downtime to recover, but you may need to avoid intercourse for several days.

Optimal results are achieved with three treatments over 18 weeks. After that, the results are long-lasting and you’ll only need a treatment once a year to maintain vaginal health.

*Individual results may vary.
