What is an irregular period?

Normal menstrual cycles are completed in about 28 days, or every four weeks, and each period lasts about five to seven days, during which around an ounce of blood is passed, or maybe a little more. An abnormal period is one which fells well outside these ranges, including periods that last more than a week, those in which more than three ounces of blood are passed (menorrhagia), those in which far less blood is passed (spotting only) and those that occur much less frequently than every 28 days. Complete absence of periods or spotting between periods is also considered abnormal (assuming you aren't using a birth control pill that results in fewer or lighter periods).

How can I tell if I have a heavier than normal menstrual flow?

A heavier than normal period is considered one in which:

  • you must use a combination of tampons and pads to control the flow of blood

  • you pass clots

  • your pad or tampon or both must be changed every couple of hours, even during the night while you're sleeping

  • your period lasts more than a week

What are the causes of abnormal periods?

Heavy periods and other types of irregular periods including absence of periods can have several causes, including:

  • menopause

  • uterine fibroids

  • polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

  • pelvic inflammatory disease

  • use of some types of birth control, including birth control pills and IUDs

  • ectopic pregnancy

  • uterine, ovarian or cervical cancer

  • kidney, liver or thyroid disease

  • other diseases or conditions affecting the uterus or ovaries

What kinds of treatments are available for heavy menstrual bleeding?

Treatments for heavy bleeding depend on the underlying cause of bleeding and include:

  • uterine artery embolization to cut off blood flow to fibroids

  • minimally-invasive surgical procedures to remove the uterine lining, remove fibroids or treat endometriosis

  • hormone replacement therapy

  • other medications
